HE CRAVED HER FRAGRANCE THE next day as he sat at his desk, engaged in a losing fight with distraction, swaddled in memories of the previous night.
The coffee didnât help his nerves when her name popped up on his ringing phone. A bead of sweat raced down his back and he kicked his office door closed.
âHey Lark.â A judder in his voice hinted at his jumpiness and he slapped his forehead. Shouldâve stopped at one cup of coffee.
âLast nightâs all I can think about.â
âMe too. Are you doing okay?â Jesus, Wyatt, that sounds like you forced her into it. Be cool, will ya?
âDefinitely.â Her voice was a suggestive taunt. âBusy day?â
âAh, Iâm handling it.â Heâd like to handle her, but climbing through the phone wasnât an option.
âHavenât been able to wipe the smile from my face.â
âCanât say Iâm in any better shape. Last night, you made me feelââ
His door flew open. âSorry, I didnât know you were in here,â Barbara blurted after charging into his office.
âUm, yeah.â Like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he wiped his forehead and sat straighter in his chair. His tone became all business. âAfter looking over the permit, I have to agree.â
âPardon?â Lark asked.
âRight. Um-hmm.â He cleared his throat. âAbout your email.â
âI didnât sendâoh, someoneâs in your office?â
âSpot on. Iâll consider what we talked about and circle back.â
âOutstanding.â She dropped her voice to impersonate a man. âI look forward to your report.â
âSounds good.â
She laughed. âIâll let you go.â
He set the phone on his desk and tended to Barbaraâs questions. When she left, he noticed two permits awaiting the runner, both marked with Frank Lovejoyâs name. Shouldnât trust these with just anyone. Best to handle these directly.
