HE CRAVED HER FRAGRANCE THE next day as he sat at his desk, engaged in a losing fight with distraction, swaddled in memories of the previous night.

The coffee didn’t help his nerves when her name popped up on his ringing phone. A bead of sweat raced down his back and he kicked his office door closed.

“Hey Lark.” A judder in his voice hinted at his jumpiness and he slapped his forehead. Should’ve stopped at one cup of coffee.

“Last night’s all I can think about.”

“Me too. Are you doing okay?” Jesus, Wyatt, that sounds like you forced her into it. Be cool, will ya?

“Definitely.” Her voice was a suggestive taunt. “Busy day?”

“Ah, I’m handling it.” He’d like to handle her, but climbing through the phone wasn’t an option.

“Haven’t been able to wipe the smile from my face.”

“Can’t say I’m in any better shape. Last night, you made me feel—”

His door flew open. “Sorry, I didn’t know you were in here,” Barbara blurted after charging into his office.

“Um, yeah.” Like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he wiped his forehead and sat straighter in his chair. His tone became all business. “After looking over the permit, I have to agree.”

“Pardon?” Lark asked.

“Right. Um-hmm.” He cleared his throat. “About your email.”

“I didn’t send—oh, someone’s in your office?”

“Spot on. I’ll consider what we talked about and circle back.”

“Outstanding.” She dropped her voice to impersonate a man. “I look forward to your report.”

“Sounds good.”

She laughed. “I’ll let you go.”

He set the phone on his desk and tended to Barbara’s questions. When she left, he noticed two permits awaiting the runner, both marked with Frank Lovejoy’s name. Shouldn’t trust these with just anyone. Best to handle these directly.
